“How can I be more productive?” is a question that I often get asked and I understand why. Productivity gives you purpose. Striving towards something gives you energy and a focus. There are a few things that can increase productivity like building solid routines and habits.
According to studies, up to 40% of our daily actions are powered by habits. But how do we form the right habits, so that we can increase our productivity? Here are five habits you can implement in your daily life to help increase your productivity.
Eat well, sleep well
During lockdown many of us have been staying up later, slipping into bad sleeping patterns. But it’s important you get enough sleep as your body needs ample time to rest so you can give 150 percent at whatever you do. You also need fuel to sustain your productivity, so make sure you’re eating nutritious foods that leave you feeling energised.
Take regular breaks
Taking regular breaks at work has been shown to be important in recovering from stress, which can, in turn, improve your performance. A quick ten minute break has been shown to help you process and retain information. We often solve our most difficult problems when we’re in a daydream type state. For example, many of us come upon a great idea while daydreaming in the shower or during a walk. It’s about giving your brain time to discover its own solution rather than forcing an answer.
The modern world offers plenty of distractions, just one quick check of your phone and you’ve lost twenty minutes…. If you find it difficult to avoid social media or your favourite apps it might be worth investing in a distraction-free app. Such as Freedom or Cold Turkey. These apps block you from specific sites for an allocated period of time.
Work alongside productive people
Focus can be contagious, so if possible why not surround yourself with the most productive people in your workplace. Not only will this simple step inspire you to work in a similar way you’re also less likely to be interrupted by those working alongside you – they’re far too busy concentrating on the job at hand.
Learn to manage your time well
It can be difficult to control every single minute of your day, however you can plan and exercise conscious control over time spent on specific activities. Improving your time management skills can help you achieve desired goals with less effort and improve overall productivity.
