No matter who you are or what you do with each day, there’s a certain level of time management that’s needed, to manage your life. We all know that there are only ever 24 hours in each day. It’s impossible to change that, no matter how much effort, time or money you have. But how you manage that available time will influence so much – from how you feel emotionally, right through to your overall level of business or career success.

But what happens if you’re not great at time management? Is it a big issue and, when all is said and done, does it really cost you anything?

How bad time management affects your health

Stress is one of the biggest side effects of bad time management. The constant pressure of feeling rushed, busy and overwhelmed means you’re constantly in a state of fight or flight.  And all that adrenaline pumping through you equates to typical symptoms of stress – such as high blood pressure, headaches, and a lack of energy. 

Before you know it, your mental and physical health is affected and your confidence levels start to drop. Negative thoughts kick in and good habits fall by the wayside. If you don’t turn it around, your inability to manage your time is going to lead towards anxiety and even depression.

How it’s affecting your relationships

It’s often our nearest and dearest that bear the brunt of our resulting moods. Bad time management can lead us to constantly feel rushed and busy – and this means we end up snappy, impatient and short-tempered! We then become indecisive and we irritate others with these actions, as they can often see that our time management is the real issue.

Another knock-on effect of this is we’re also distracted when we are able to spend time with our friends and loved ones. They can feel left out and ignored, as they worry we don’t have time for them and this negatively impacts on our relationships. And if we’re not careful, bad time management can end up costing us these relationships.

How it’s affecting your career

Finally, there are our careers – and bad time management is definitely costing us here, too! Bad time management can mean we’re so busy firefighting our to-do list and our time, we miss out on opportunities to grow and progress. 

We can hinder our path for progression, as we’re not focused on our career goals. Our bad time management habits mean we get overwhelmed and behind, deadlines get missed and we let others down. And as others end up seeing us as indecisive, unreliable and tardy, this can mean we also get passed over for promotion and career advancement.

How can you turn it around?

Bad time management can cost us dearly, and not just in our professional lives. If you want to really turn it around, you need to learn how to manage your time more effectively. And this starts with you owning the problem and committing to implementing the actions needed, to change it for the better.

Start by identifying where it’s all going wrong and what’s causing your time issues. You can then compile a clear set of action steps to help move it forward.
